On Sunday 11th February, the Mt Buninyong RFB celebrated 75 years service to the communities of Navigators, Yendon, Lal Lal, Scotsburn and Clarendon.
The Brigade was set up at a meeting at the Scotsburn Hall in 1932. Many families in the district can follow their participation in the Brigade since those early days, with some names on the honours boards being repeated many times. The Auxiliary was officially begun by the ladies in 1983, after the infamous Ash Wednesday fires. In recent years the Junior Brigade has been training the local young people aged 11 to 16 years and has had great success in competitions, as evidenced by the overcrowded trophy cabinet.
About 100 people attended the afternoon tea at the Lal Lal Hall. The fire engines, one owned by CFA and the other bought through local public fundraising, were proudly on display outside. Old fire fighting equipment – beaters and knapsack sprays – amazed the younger visitors. Photos and newspaper cuttings mounted in the hall added to the memorabilia.
All members of the community are welcome to join the brigade and serve their district. Participation is divided into operational – those who wear the distinctive gold overalls and ride on the fire trucks, and non-operational – the behind-the-scenes helpers and fund raisers whose support allows the fire-fighters valuable time off.
